The Microsoft Agent Decompiler (MAD) is a freeware decompiler software developed by Lebeau Software that allows users to decompile Microsoft Agent 2.0 characters. It was available for download on the Lebeau Software website.[1]

Usage

The program can be used to decompile Microsoft Agent characters. It can also be used to give Office Assistants and desktop assistants voices and to get the images for the character articles that lack them. In order for a character to be decompiled, they must be a 2.0 Microsoft Agent and must not exceed 256 pixels in size. Originally, it was used for when the creator developing the Microsoft Agent character loses the ACD file. It also used to be illegal to decompile Microsoft's own Microsoft Agent characters due to the site stating that it was not allowed to do it.

As of 2025, with the discontinuation of Microsoft Agent in 2009, it is relatively risk-free to decompile Microsoft's own Microsoft Agent characters.

Trivia

  • It is unknown what date the Microsoft Agent Decompiler was released, but it is likely to be in 2000 or 2001.
  • It was used to decompile almost every Microsoft Agent character.
  • Microsoft Agent 1.5 characters were unable to be decompiled with the Microsoft Agent Decompiler due to 1.5 characters being compiled differently from 2.0 characters.
  • The maximum pixel size that a Microsoft Agent character can be decompiled is 256 pixels. Exceeding this limit causes an error saying "Destination buffer exceeded", but the audio is still decompiled.
  • It is likely that the Microsoft Agent Decompiler has been discontinued by Lebeau Software.
